Body condition score vs. scale weight
Breed weight ranges are averages — a muscular Labrador and a lean one can weigh the same but have very different health profiles. Body condition score (BCS) on a 9-point scale is more clinically meaningful: 4–5/9 is ideal. At 4–5, ribs are easily felt with light pressure but not visible. Waist is visible from above and there's an abdominal tuck from the side. At 6–7, ribs need firm pressure to feel; at 8–9, fat deposits are visible. At 1–3, ribs, spine, and pelvic bones are visible with no fat cover.
Health risks of overweight dogs
Roughly 56% of US dogs are overweight or obese, making it the most common preventable disease in dogs. Even 10–20% excess body weight significantly increases risk of arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, breathing problems, and certain cancers. Studies consistently show overweight dogs live 1–2 years less than lean dogs of the same breed. The good news: modest weight loss (5–10% of body weight) produces measurable improvements in mobility and metabolic markers within weeks.
How to help your dog lose weight safely
Reduce calories by 20–30% from the calculated maintenance level — not more, as rapid loss causes muscle wasting. Use the dog food calculator to find the target kcal, then measure food by weight (grams) rather than cups for accuracy. Switch to a diet food only if your vet recommends it — many are high in carbohydrates, which isn't ideal. Increase exercise gradually. Recheck body condition monthly and aim for 1–2% body weight loss per week maximum.
