When do puppies stop growing?
Growth timeline varies dramatically by adult size. Toy and small breeds (under 25 lbs adult) typically reach full size by 10–12 months. Medium breeds (25–55 lbs) finish between 12–15 months. Large breeds (55–100 lbs) take 15–18 months. Giant breeds like Great Danes, Saint Bernards, and Mastiffs don't fully mature until 18–24 months — their skeletal growth plates don't close until much later. Feeding large-breed puppies adult food too early, or overfeeding calcium, can accelerate bone growth and increase the risk of skeletal abnormalities.
How to predict adult weight from puppy weight
The most accurate prediction method depends on the breed. For small breeds, the weight at 8 weeks multiplied by 4 gives a reasonable estimate. For medium breeds, the 14-week weight doubled is a common rule of thumb. For large breeds, the 16-week weight doubled. These are approximations — purebred dogs are more predictable than mixed breeds. For mixed breeds, the best signal is often meeting the parents, as genetics drives adult size more than early weight.
Puppy nutrition during the growth phase
Puppies have 2–3× the calorie needs per pound of body weight compared to adult dogs. Large and giant breed puppies need specially formulated large-breed puppy food that controls calcium and phosphorus ratios — standard puppy food promotes faster bone growth, which increases the risk of developmental orthopedic diseases like hip dysplasia and osteochondrosis. Small and toy breed puppies need more frequent meals (3–4 times daily) to prevent hypoglycemia, as their small bodies deplete blood sugar faster.
